How do I write a Legacy Letter?

What is a legacy letter?
Should I write one for my loved ones before I die?

A legacy letter is written to impart knowledge and wisdom; and leave personal memories, family stories, core values or life lessons with family members, friends or future generations.
It is a gift of love that will always be treasured by the recipients.
I have been privileged to witness the joy that legacy letters bring to the lives of loved ones after their dear person has died.
Legacy letters are priceless treasures that can form important parts of family history for generations to come.
Or, they could simply and very importantly provide a private comfort for those grieving after you have gone.

What should I include in my Legacy Letter?

Who is this letter for?
Is it to your family/friend group in general, or a specific friend or relative?

I am writing this letter because….
What is YOUR purpose in wiring the letter/s?

I want to Thank you for..
What do you most you appreciate about this person and what they’ve done for you and brought to your life?
How has this person enriched your life?

What do you want to share about your values and principals?
Important things I have learned along the way are…
Some of the biggest mistakes I made were…
Some of my greatest regrets are…
My values are & principals I believe in are…

How do you want to be remembered? What do you hope you’ve brought to their lives?
I hope I…

The most important decisions in my life were…

I am proud to have achieved…

The greatest joys in my life have been…

I hope you know and always remember…
Be generous, wise and hopeful while considering this answer.

I hope you will think of me when…

Looking back I now know…

Your parting message…
Do you have guidance to offer?
A message for future generations?
Do you have a quote/saying/poem to leave them with?

A few more details to consider:

When will you share your letter? Before or after the end of your life? Do you want to share the moment with the recipient/s? Or is it a message to be received after you have gone? Perhaps to be shared at your funeral?

Keep a digital version; and a printed copy of your letter with your end of life documents.
Give a copy to a trusted friend or family member, or your celebrant or end of life planner.
